“Laban lang” has been a collective mantra in the Philippines for years. We glorify hustle culture, and understandably so—we see success stories amplified by the media we consume daily. We meet people who admit the pain and sweat they’ve endured to get where they are. However, the one person we often fail to meet is ourselves. We don’t take the time to look within and consider how hustle culture has made us neglect our own needs.
Over the past few years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s been a growing awareness of the importance of investing in “me time.” It’s become clear that taking time for ourselves is crucial for both our physical and mental well-being. Me time is about stepping away from the grind and indulging in activities that nourish your mind, body, and spirit. It’s time not spent thinking about work but focusing on you—whether that means taking up a new hobby, getting outside for fresh air, or simply resting.
There’s always been a debate about whether we should “live to work” or “work to live.” Whatever your belief, it’s impossible to truly live if you neglect your own needs. Sometimes, thriving means breaking free from stifling routines. Even small changes—like doing something outside your usual schedule—can feed your heart and soul. It’s about finding what works for you and reconnecting with yourself in ways that refresh and energize you.
Is there a new restaurant down the street that you haven’t tried because you’ve been too busy with Zoom calls? It might be time to say no to that 6 PM meeting and enjoy dinner at that new spot. Have you always wanted to attend an immersive yoga class but can’t because you’re exhausted after work? Maybe it’s time to take a few hours or even a day off. After all, no one should be deprived of new, enriching experiences.
Prioritizing yourself doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start small and gradually build your practice of self-care. Learn at your own pace, and most importantly, listen to your body. Everyone’s path is different, and that’s okay. Whether you love to read, take long walks, or enjoy quiet moments with a cup of tea, the goal is to embrace whatever makes you feel whole.
One thing we all need to leave behind is the guilt that often comes with taking time for ourselves. Me time isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. When we prioritize ourselves, we’re not only taking care of our own well-being but also enhancing our ability to be present for others. So don’t feel bad about indulging in time just for you—it’s a vital step toward living a full and balanced life.
The grind will always be there, but me time is what brings you back to yourself. It’s free, harmless, and beneficial to you. Remember: this is your life, and you deserve to live it in a way that prioritizes your well-being.
